Abstract

This article brings to fore the place of grammar in the teaching and learning of French language in Nigeria and the factors that hinder it especially at NCE level. Grammar is considered as the heart of a language. The teaching and learning of grammar is an integral part of a French class. The teacher employs different strategies such as dictation, discussion, the study of a text, group work amongst others. French language is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and the second official language in Nigeria as approved by the federal government. Unfortunately it has been bedeviled with several problems which have imposed tremendous difficulties to the students in the course of their studies. This article has proffered some solutions with the view of remedying the situation and making the teaching and learning of French language more effective at NCE level.
